What do equality, diversity, equity and inclusion mean?

First of all, equality.
Equality means offering the same rights and opportunities to ALL people, especially within a workplace setting.
Second, equity.
This means offering those rights and opportunities FAIRLY, which means catering to people’s DIFFERENCES, so they are given fair ACCESS to the opportunities within the workplace.
Third, diversity.
This is understanding the uniqueness of each person. It means embracing the range of human differences, including people’s beliefs, abilities, preferences, backgrounds, values and identities. And, inclusion is an extension of all these things.

It means that ALL people, without exception, have the right to be included, respected and appreciated as valuable members of the community.

What is The Difference Between Diversity and Inclusion?

Diversity refers to who we are and inclusion is how we feel so diversity is the mix of visible and invisible.

Human differences might be related to our gender, our age, our culture, our ethnicity, our abilities, our lifestyles or our sexual orientation.

Diversity is pretty much endless and it’s a little bit like an iceberg – there are aspects of our identities that can be seen from the outside there are other aspects that are under the waterline, and inclusion is how we feel in this culture that makes us feel valued and free to be ourselves even when we are different from the majority – when we look different, or when we think different, or when we behave differently from the majority.

How Can Inclusive Leadership Change Organisational Behaviour?

We, as the individuals, ARE the organisational culture! So if we want to change the organisational culture, we as individuals must shift our behaviour.

And like every drop in the ocean matters, every person in the organisation does matter. Because what I’ll say to a leader is especially when you’re systemically entrenched in minimisation, it feels like you’re up against this massive tide or this this pressure, and you are, but you can immediately impact your domain of influence.

So you’re a leader and you have seven direct reports say, usually it’s anywhere between five to eight, your direct leaders, will you impact their experience?

And then imagine if you are modelling what inclusive behaviour looks like, and you’re showing up on a daily basis model it, modelling it, modelling it, consistently because that’s what leaders do.

And then they go and often they model it and it cascades down.

And when we say the tone at the top cascades down we literally mean it cascades down because we model the behaviour and then as it cascades within the organisation.

This is how we change organisational culture.
